Facade Materials in Jaipur: Sandstone, Brick, Lime Plaster, Concrete and Glass Compared
How five common facade materials behave in heat, dust and monsoon, and which jobs each does best on a Jaipur home.

There is no single best facade material for Jaipur. Each one handles sun, dust and monsoon differently and asks for different upkeep. Most good facades combine two or three materials, using each where it performs best. Here is how the five common choices compare.
Sandstone
Locally available and closely tied to Jaipur's look, sandstone is durable and its warm colour suits the city's light. Used as cladding or masonry, it needs good detailing at joints and sills so water does not stain it.
- Strengths: durability, local character, natural texture.
- Watch for: variation in colour and quality between batches; ask to see a sample and the supplier's stock.
Brick
Exposed brick gives a warm, textured surface that needs no paint. Quality varies, so choose well-burnt, even bricks and good mortar work. Water entering through poor joints is the usual problem.
- Strengths: texture, low paint upkeep, good thermal mass.
- Watch for: moisture at the base and parapet; detail these carefully.
Lime plaster
Lime plaster gives a soft, breathable finish with a gentle patina, traditional to Rajasthan. It suits those who like hand-finished surfaces, and it needs skilled application and curing.
- Strengths: breathable, soft finish, traditional look.
- Watch for: slower work, skilled labour and some regular maintenance.
Concrete
Exposed concrete works well for fins, lintels, canopies and structural features. It is strong and can create deep shade, but it holds heat and needs careful finishing and waterproofing.
Glass
Glass brings light and views, but in Jaipur direct sun can overheat rooms. Use it where it is shaded, choose suitable glazing with your architect and avoid large glass faces on the west.
Upkeep, dust and weather
Jaipur's dust, strong sun and short but heavy monsoon test every surface. Whatever you choose, good detailing matters as much as the material itself: sloping sills, drip grooves under projections, proper parapet copings and waterproofing at joints keep water out and facades clean for longer. Ask what cleaning and repainting or resealing each option will need over the years, and who will do it.
Choosing a mix
- Decide where the facade faces the sun, and shade or protect those parts first.
- Choose one main material for the larger surface, and one or two accents.
- Compare long-term upkeep, not just the cost at the start.
- Look at samples in daylight, and at nearby buildings that have aged.
